Robert Lee Butler, affectionately known as "Pete," a native of Waterloo, Iowa, was born to Bilbo Montgomery and Lauretta Butler on April 16, 1946. He transitioned and received his wings on May 23, 2025.
Bro. Pete attended school in the Waterloo School District graduating from East Waterloo High School in 1965. While attending East High School he was an active player on the football and track team. He honorably served in the United States Army during Vietnam.
He accepted Christ early in life and was baptized at Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Late Rev. L.J. Jordan. He later became a member of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church. He currently served at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church and sang in the Male Chorus. He lead "Use Me Lord" which was one of his favorite songs. He married Annie "Chicken" Bloomfield and to this union they had three sons. They later divorced. Years later he met his new love, Sheila Woods, and they were united in marriage on June 10, 2006. To this union he gained three more bonus children.
Bro. Pete loved life, his family, and his friends. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. His most favorite, new found hobby was golfing, golfing, and golfing!!! He became a member of the Swingers Golf Club. He currently holds the Reigning Title Trophy until 2025, which he was very proud to receive.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Sheila Butler; five sons, Ricky (Shaunel) Butler, Anthony "Tony" (Salisia) Butler, Robert "Lamont" (Freda) Butler, all of Georgia, Ricardo "Ric" (Serice) Woods, and Carlos "Tonka" Woods, both of Waterloo; one daughter, Shakelia (Mike) Woods-Johnson of Virginia; 18 grandchildren; three godchildren; one brother, Rudolph "Rudy" (Velma) Martin; two sisters, Cheryl Kay Mosley and Deborah Johnson, all of Waterloo; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and Rudolph Martin, Sr.; infant sister, Claudia Montgomery; sister, Elizabeth Montgomery; five brothers, Henry L. Butler, Efonda Montgomery, and Eugene, James, and Gene Hayes.
Bro. Pete will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
