Robert D. "Bob" Thompson, 91, of Berwick, formerly of Waterloo, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at his home.
He was born on June 1, 1933, in Lynnville, son of Harold C. and Helen I. Sheehan Thompson. Bob graduated from New Sharon High School in 1952. He joined the U.S. Air Force on May 29, 1952. His basic training was at Parks Air Force Base in California. Bob served at Cheyenne Air Force Base in Wyoming as a base supply technician. He was then sent overseas to Thule Air Force in Greenland from December 1952 to December 1953. Bob then was stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, GA. He was discharged in July 1956. Bob was recalled back in August 1957. He was stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL. He was discharged in April 1959.
Bob married Alice Lanell Jefferson on November 11, 1954; she preceded him in death on April 10, 1992. He later married Dorothy Cook on March 20, 1993. Jeanette Greve on February 9, 2007; both preceded him in death.
He worked for Hy-Vee for 33 years, retiring in 1995. He started as a meat cutter, which he did for many years, and worked in various positions around the store toward the end of his career. He also worked there part-time after his retirement.
He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Cedar Falls for many years. He was a member of the Trenton Lodge #111 A.F. & A.M. in Trenton, MO, Shriners Al-Kahir, Vintage Auto; and was currently a road runner for El Riad Shrine, in Sioux City, SD. He was also a member of the New Sharon American Legion Post #446, and many other legion posts throughout the years.
Bob is survived by his sons, Michael (Christine) Thompson of Ray City, GA, and Charles "Chuck" (Phyllis) Thompson of Berwick; daughter, Candy (Scott) Cross of Faribault, MN; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three wives; brother, Dwight Thompson; sister-in-law, Beverly Thompson; and Aunt, Katherine Thompson Hildebrand.
Services: 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 5, 2025, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Cedar Falls, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Private family committal to take place in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo, with military rites to be performed. Memorials may be directed to the family.
