Cory Ryan Scharnhorst, 38, of Cedar Falls, passed away on November 28, 2024, at Mercy One Waterloo Medical Center due to injuries from an accident.
Cory was born on August 28, 1986, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Gary and Kelly (Fackler) Scharnhorst. He graduated from Hudson High School in 2005 and went on to attend Kirkwood and Hawkeye Community Colleges, earning an Associate's degree in 2008. He later obtained a Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management from Upper Iowa University in 2020.
Cory dedicated 12 years to John Deere before exploring new opportunities, including obtaining a CDL license and working for Blue Bin Recycling in Cedar Falls.
On October 7, 2017, Cory married his high school sweetheart, Sarah (Ingamells), at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was a devoted husband and father to three wonderful children.
Cory was passionate about sports and excelled as an athlete. He was a loyal fan of the St Louis Cardinals and Oregon Ducks football, even having a customized license plate to show his support. He also enjoyed smoking meat, experimenting with new recipes, and taking great care of his lawn.
Cory's legacy continues through his generous gift of organ donation, through which he was able to save four lives.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah; three children, Addison Highland of North Liberty, and Owyn and Peyton Scharnhorst of Cedar Falls; his father and stepmother, Gary and Teresa Scharnhorst of Hudson; his sister, Amy Doherty of Cedar Falls; stepsister, Nicole (Grant) Van Brocklin of Cedar Falls; stepbrother, Nick (Sarah) Clough of Hudson; his maternal grandmother, Sharon Fackler of Waterloo; and five nephews. Cory was preceded in death by his mother, maternal grandfather, and paternal grandparents.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 11, from 5-7 pm at Locke Funeral Home, Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, Iowa. In accordance with Cory's wishes, there will be no formal services, and his body will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a future designation.
