Howard Durnin, 85, of Waterloo, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, at UPH-Allen Hospital, in Waterloo. He was born September 5, 1939, in Waterloo, son of Edson T. and Ardis (Trewin) Durnin. He served in the United States Marine Corps receiving an Honorable Discharge.
Howard worked as a chipper and grinder in the foundry and later in cab assembly at John Deere, retiring August 31, 1997. Later, he helped Sue at Thorson Properties helping in maintenance for 10 years. He was member of Kimball United Methodist Church in Waterloo. He was the former director of Greater Iowa Bowling Assoc and was helping as a youth bowling coach. He enjoyed staying busy by spending his time golfing in the morning and bowling in the afternoon.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Duane (Sharon) Durnin, DeAnna (Jeremy) Durnin-Blad, and Donita "Dolly" Schults' all of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren, Duane Jr. (Talisa), Devann, Cody, Cassie (Justin), Branndon (Shelley), Chassidy, BryAnn (Conner), Christian, Alexa, and Brody; 12 great-grandchildren, Lilyonha, Laylonie, Elliena, Oliver, Hunter, Adaline, Adrian, Joey, Cayleigh, Leah, Broggan, and Remy; and sister-in-law, Carm Durnin of Hudson.
He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Bryar Sue Gaede; and brothers, Dewey, Irvin, Marvin, Kenneth, and Thomas Durnin.
Funeral Services: 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave.
Burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery with military rites by United States Marine Corps, American Legion Post #138 and VFW Post 1623.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, October 4, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park.
