Iris L. Shaffer, 84 of Waterloo, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024. She was born July 24, 1939, in Arlington, Iowa, daughter of Thomas McGrane and Iva Mae (Gratke) Leonard. She graduated from East High School in 1957. Iris married Charles "Sam" Shaffer on November 9, 1958, at the First Reformed Church in Evansdale. He died June 11, 2013.
She worked for the Waterloo School District as the Director of Payroll for 40 years. Then, she worked for Friendship Village in the finance office and officially retired in 2015. She enjoyed and was proud of being a businesswoman in the workplace. Iris was a member of the Grace Reformed Church. She was very generous with her family, sharing her faith, and her time going to her grandchildren's programs. She kept it simple but kept it disciplined in Grandma's way. Every Sunday, family time was shared after a meal at Grandma's house. She enjoyed her independence after Sam passed away, traveling with her sister and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Darci (Randy) Hartke and Darla (Mark) Priest, both of Waterloo. Four grandchildren: Shari (Nick) Meyer, Kelly (Nate) Wacker and their children Kora and Rya, Daniel (Jillian) Priest and their children, Kaydence, Clayton, Charlotte and Daniela, and Caleb (Nicole) Priest and their children, Easton, Camden, and Coleson.
Iris is preceded in death by her husband, brother, Gilbert Leonard and sister, Marilyn Platt.
Funeral Services will be 10:30am Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Grace Reformed Church (520 Maxwell St., Waterloo) with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00pm Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park.
