Mary Buchanan, 82, of Shell Rock, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. She was born March 25, 1943, in Waterloo, daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Campagna) Trierweiler. She graduated from Columbus High School.

She married Lloyd Buchanan in 1966, they later divorced. Mary worked for 15 years for the Black Hawk County Health department as a home health care aid, retiring in 2003. She also volunteered for several years as a senior companion.

Mary enjoyed working with her hands, especially crocheting, sewing blankets, and baking. She was a selfless, giving person, often returning favors with baked goods. She will be remembered for her dry humor, wit and charm.

She is survived by her children: Lloyd Buchanan, Jr. of Waterloo, Robert (Alisa) Buchanan of Brandon, Tammy Buchanan of Waterloo, and Leann (Curt) Atkins of Waverly; her sisters: Barbara Smith, Marlene Wright, Karen Buchanan, and Collett McCabe; brother Edward (Charlene) Trierweiler; grandchildren: Nicole and Mikel Buchanan, and Jacob and Paige Atkins; and great-grandchildren: Elliott and Violet.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Nancy Sizemore.

Oh, Mary, I remember you so well from years and years at St. Mary's and Columbus. I remember you sly smile when we would think we had pulled one over on the Sisters. I doubt if we ever did. We had some fun times. And we learned a lot. I often asked Karen about you and wanted you to come to some of our reunions. I felt so bad you were not up to it. I know you will be in good form in the arms of our Good Lord. Blessings Sally (Blitsch)Kelly

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.. Aunt Mary, a beautiful soul whose love for us will never be forgotten. As children , she was Always there for us! We are all better for it, My sympathies and condolences, especially to my cousins today.
