Nanette Joens, 82 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, November 15, 2024, at Northbrook Manor, Cedar Rapids. She was born November 28, 1941, in Waterloo, daughter of Edward S. and Mildred D. (Wagner) Spiegel. She graduated from Waterloo East High School.
She married Jim Owen, to this union, they had four children. They later divorced. She later married Larry Joens in March of 1976. He died in April of 2017. Nan loved her family and was their greatest fan.
Nanette worked as a Secretary at Bunger Middle School for several years. She continued working at the ISU Extension Office, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hinson Mfg. and eventually retired after 13 years at Advanced Heat Treat.
She was a member early on at Immanuel Lutheran Church and then later joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, teaching adult classes and Sunday school. She sang in the choir for many years. Nan's faith was always moving and growing, she joined a neighborhood Bible study that would last over 50 years.
Nanette is survived by; her children, Paul (Amy) Owen of Cedar Rapids, Nick Owen of Wheat Ridge, CO, Andrew (Kwyn) Owen of Dubuque, Heidi (Mark) Sanman of Las Vegas, Brenda (Steve) Everman of Hampton and daughter in law, Peggy Joens of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren, Neal (Valerie Brown) Owen, Rachel Sanman, Julia Sanman, Jenna (Justice) Schlicher, Jordan (Kaela) Owen and Katelyn Owen, Seth, Alyssa, and Zandrew Owen, Kelli Joens, Lindsey (Jeronne) Mabry, Nick Joens, Morgan (Andy) Thurman, and Mason (Mikayla) Everman; 10 great-grandchildren, Shawn, Kyle, Trevor, Gabe and Grace Owen, Vincent and Imogen Thurman, Jett Schlicker, Taytum Everman and Kash Mabry; sister in laws, Gloria Spiegel and Marlys Spiegel.
She is preceded in death by her husband Larry; son, Bryan Joens; brothers, Kent (Kate) and Reed Spiegel.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park (4140 Kimball)
Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Visitation will be an hour prior the services.
Memorials are directed to Unity Point Hospice.
