When it comes to Zach’s passions, family is at the top of the list. He stays active with his wife, two children, and two dachshunds—traveling, attending Hawkeye football or wrestling events, or hanging out by a beach or a pool.
Zach joined Locke’s in 2015 where he now serves as a funeral director and family plays a big role in his work every day.
“Anytime I serve a family, I always try to care for them and their loved one like they are my own family,” Zach said. “If you approach each arrangement with the same level of care, empathy, and attention to detail, you can be a vital part of the family’s grieving process and helping them move forward.”
Zach didn’t initially set out to be a funeral director, however. He majored in journalism and mass communications at the University of Iowa and wanted to go into sports media. In fact, his first two jobs after college were with an independent baseball team in Palm Springs, California, and the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines.
Though his career path may be a little different from others in his position, Locke’s has been the perfect fit—in no small way because of the family aspect.
“One thing I love about working at Locke Funeral Services is working for a family-owned business,” Zach said. “The Locke family is just as invested in the success and future of my family as I am. It is truly a humbling experience to work for people like that.”
Since joining Locke’s, Zach has also noticed that each and every day is meaningful in its own way—not just in the way Locke’s team works together, but also the impact they have on families in the community.
“It’s hard to pinpoint one exact memory that is special,” Zach said. “I have unique experiences with my coworkers and the families we serve on an almost daily basis. And I am honored to be entrusted with the care of a family’s loved one and the responsibility of crafting a meaningful life tribute event for each family I serve.”
As Zach tells it, that sense of honor and service to families who have lost a loved one is built into the culture at Locke’s. It’s something he felt from the moment he started and continues to see each day.
“We are a pillar of the community,” Zach said. “That means honoring our heritage, while looking and building toward the future. The Locke family has served the Waterloo-Cedar Falls and surrounding communities for generations. I consider myself fortunate to be part of that story.”
Zach has learned a lot throughout his tenure at Locke’s. And to leave some words of wisdom, he wants to remind everyone of two things: Family is important, and never take anything for granted.
“My spouse is my rock,” Zach said. “She keeps me grounded. My children are the rays of sunshine which bring life to my days.”
“Life is short, truly,” he concluded. “So, buy the ticket. Take the ride. Enjoy the drink. Squeeze every last drop out of it that you can. And just be grateful for every day.”
