William D. "Bill" Volkamer, 80, of Waterloo, died on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the Copper Creek Senior Living in West Union. He was born on November 24, 1943 in Des Moines, the son of Fred and Cloryne (Whyte) Volkamer. Bill graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo.
Bill joined the Air Force in 1965. While stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, he met his wife, Ileen J. Johnson. They were married on November 20, 1965. Later they moved to Waterloo where he began working alongside his father as a salesman at Fox Leather Co.
Bill spent most weekends on the golf course. He was a lifelong Dodger and Vikings fan. If you stopped by for a visit, you would be sure to find a Western on television if he wasn't out mowing his immaculate lawn. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. They all blame their Dairy Queen addiction on Grandpa.
William is survived by his daughter, Jennifer, and son in-law, Ryan Thyer of Waterloo; grandchildren, Austin Packard, Courtney Packard, and Noah Thyer of Waterloo, and Samantha Volkamer of Shawnee, KS; great-grandchildren, Rowan and Payton; sister, Patricia Stanford of Honolulu' HI; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
William is preceded in death by wife, Ileen; his son, Billy; his parents; and sister, Sue Shepard.
