Vernon K. Kaune, 89, of Waterloo died at his home on Sunday, January 7, 2007.

He was born December 18, 1917, in Otterville, Iowa, son of Edward and Carrie (Miller) Kaune.

He married Viola Mae Peterson on July 27, 1943, in Reno, Nevada. She died September 21, 1988.

Vern worked for Bordens Soy Bean Processing Company from 1939 until they moved to Illinois in 1962. He then went to work for Chamberlain Manufacturing Corporation as a Stationery Engineer in the Boiler Room, retiring in 1982.

He served as a Staff Sergeant in the Special Training Group (now known as Special Forces) as an automatic weapons specialist in the U.S. Army during WW II.

Vern enjoyed fishing at their cabin in La Porte on the Cedar River. Many good “family” memories were made there. He looked forward to gardening in the springtime, even pulling the weeds.

Vern is survived by son Ronald and his wife Nancy Kaune of Dunkerton, son-in-law Lee Suiter of Parker, Colorado, granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Michael Karlowicz of Washington, D.C., grandson Brice Kaune of Dunkerton, and great-granddaughter Riley Karlowicz.

He is preceded in death by daughter Pam Suiter, brothers Edward “Miller” Kaune, Donald Kaune, Glenn Kaune, and two brothers in infancy; and sisters Darlyne Wentworth and Grace Thomas.
