Van Raymond Johnson, 77, of La Porte City, died on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Park Centre Garden View under hospice care in Newton. Van was born on July 3, 1946, in Tucson, AZ, to Raymond E. and Helen (Jans) Johnson. He was married to Margaret Dunnwald in 1981, and they later divorced.
Van graduated from La Porte City High School in 1964 and went on to serve in the United States Navy during Vietnam. He worked for Bell Telephone Company and then went on to work for John Deere, retiring from Engine Works-Waterloo in 2012. He was a member of UAW Local 838.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bow hunting and simply being out in nature. He also had a deep appreciation for music and greatly enjoyed Bob Dylan. Van was well known for his car collection which consisted of many classic cars, most notably a rotating stable of Mustangs which included many Shelbys, Machs, Bosses, and pace cars.
Van is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Tyson) Edwards of Newton; son, Joseph (Raquael) Johnson of Round Rock, TX; three granddaughters, Linden Berkland, Ryleigh Bond, and Alayna Johnson; two sisters, Judy (Dick) Frush of La Porte City, and Cynthia (John) Nichols of Fairfax; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Bret L. Frush.
Funeral Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29, 2024, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City. A visitation will take place one hour prior. Burial following at West View Cemetery with military honors conducted by the La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post #207. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
