Steve Allen Vignovich, 69, of Waterloo, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 13, 2026, while a patient at the University of Iowa Hospital. He was born on November 16, 1956, in Des Moines, the son of Steve Vignovich II and Opal Vignovich. Steve worked for many decades as a laborer with LiUNA! Local 177 in Des Moines. He was a member of Christian Life Church in Independence.
Steve was a strong man of faith, and his family finds comfort in knowing he is in the presence of the Lord and not suffering. He was a jokester and a devoted father who loved his children and grandchildren. In fact, he loved everyone around him and was a friend to many. Steve had many passions including mushroom hunting, fishing, painting, woodworking, and classic cars, and he shared those passions with his daughters and grandchildren. He loved working on cars and rebuilding the engines, and his pride was his 1989 Chevy Silverado, affectionately named Ruby. Steve also loved to go out to eat, and his favorites were the La Placita Taqueria in Waterloo, the Norwood Inn in Des Moines, and the Buttermilk Café in Independence.
Steve is survived by his daughters Christina (Kiko) Cortez, of Fort Madison and Sarah Cortes, of Waterloo; grandchildren Mauriana Vignovich of Waterloo, Sofia Cortes of Waterloo, and Isaac Cortez of Fort Madison; sister Becky (Gary) Cowger of Bonita Springs, FL; his faithful dog, Baby Lou; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded by his parents, sisters Mary, Marilyn, and Shirley, brothers Tom, Dickey, and Larry at 3 years of age.

Steve was a kind soul, loved God, and was great to be around. I will miss seeing him at our various men’s fellowship functions. I was thankful to be able to know him. Praying for Christina, Sarah, and the entire family during this difficult season. He was blessed by his caring daughters and their families.
Our condolences to you girls. I didn’t get the opportunity to know Steve as much as I would have liked to, but he was a kind loving person with a big heart. He loved you all so very much.
