Ruth E. Weigle, 83, of Waterloo, died on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Wellspring Living of Friendship Village after a short battle with cancer. She was born on June 20, 1940 in McGregor, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Alta (Andregg) Troester.
She married Larry J. Weigle September 15, 1962 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in McGregor, Iowa and were blessed with three children. Larry passed away February 16, 2022.
Ruth started her nursing career at the age of 16 as a nurse's aide at the McGregor, IA hospital. She attended Methodist Kahler School of Nursing at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota after graduating high school. Ruth had a very accomplished nurses training, even being a scrub nurse for Charles W. Mayo at the Mayo Clinic. She returned home and was the Inservice Director at the Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin Nursing Home. After moving to Waterloo, Ruth was a Registered Nurse on the medical floor at St. Francis Hospital/Covenant Medical Center and ended her career as a home health nurse at Covenant until her retirement in June of 2005. Ruth received a lifesaving award from the State of Iowa for resuscitating a drowning victim in McGregor and employee of the year award from Covenant. Ruth held mutual respect and friendship with the fellow nurses and doctors she worked with, often having them to her home to share produce from her garden and/or pie and coffee.
Ruth had an unforgettable grace and kindness that touched her patients and coworker's lives all through her career. She had a gentle strength that she exhibited daily in her work and family life. Ruth loved her church and Landmark Commons communities.
Ruth has five grandchildren of whom she was proud and fiercely loyal. She very seldom missed the grandkids events – baseball, football, wrestling, swimming, track, trap shooting events, or band/orchestra concerts. Gardening with the grandchildren, cooking and baking for them to watch them eat were a couple of the activities that gave her great pleasure. Her baking skills were well known with her pies being at center stage. She conducted pie baking classes for friends and family over the years and pie baking was on her bucket list during her illness.
Ruth is survived by a son, Perry J. (Kim) Weigle of Osage; daughter, Beth Bork of Urbandale; grandchildren, Chris (Shelby), Nic (Julia Quisley), and Lucas (Kaylee Klaes) Weigle, and Jack and Emma Bork; three brothers, Eldon Troester (Lorna), Raymond Troester, and Lyle Troester (Bonnie) along with many nieces and nephews.
