Matthew John Kuhn, 92, of Waterloo, passed away Sunday, September 26. 2021, at Rosewood Estate, Friendship Village. Matt was born August 25, 1929, in Homer Township, Buchanan County and graduated from Lamont High School. He later married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Moser on September 4, 1949, in Lamont. Born to this union were three children, Kaye, Karla and Kurt. Dorothy passed away July 9,1969.
Matt later married Mozelle Poock on March 18, 1973, in Waterloo. They brought together their families and made a home together for 48 years. Mozelle passed away September 3. 2021.
Matt worked briefly in banking, moonlighted at a DX Service Station…but spent 35 years working for John Deere. Initially, he worked at the Waterloo Works in the Service Parts Department and then at the Product Engineering Center in the Specifications Department. He retired on November 30, 1984.
Matt always felt the need to help where he was able. Through the years he volunteered as a BSA leader and instructor, a GSA volunteer, a volunteer for Civil Defense for National Emergencies, and volunteering for American Red Cross, serving as Black Hawk County Chairman for several years, as well as a First Aid trainer and staffing the First Aid Booth at National Dairy Cattle Congress for many years. Once he retired, Matt expanded further to volunteering his time at EPI, Covenant (MercyOne) Volunteers, SCORE and for RSVP's Tax Service which he trained volunteers to do as well as ran the Waterloo office for several years.
Matt was a member of First United Methodist Church, as well as, John Deere Supervisors' Club, Indian Guides, Waterloo Masonic Lodge, High 12, Low 12 and a volunteer for DeMolay and Rainbow Girls.
Matt especially loved the outdoors…archery, John Deere Tennis League, hiking, riding his bike, camping, canoeing, and fishing. He loved taking photos of his travels, his much-loved family and their activities. He was also a lifetime learner and tried to keep reading and learning more all his life.
Matt is survived by his daughters, Kaye (Nick) Halvorson of Waterloo, Karla (Dave) Wach of Elk Run Heights, and son, Kurt (Sue) Kuhn of Waterloo; two stepchildren, Brian (Connie) Poock and Beayn Poock; 9 grandchildren: Adam (Tami) Halvorson, Jessica (Craig) Dennison, Ellen (Brandon) Blount, Kristofer (Katie) Czerwiec, Sarah Kuhn, Erika Kuhn, Eric (Jeanne) Poock, Jenalee (Tyler) Wright and Cortney (Luke) Mikkelsen; 13 great-grandchildren.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, all his siblings, first wife, Dorothy, second wife, Mozelle, and stepdaughter, Brenda (Poock) Barron.
