Mary Katherine Wright

September 26, 1958 June 12, 2026

Mary Katherine “Cheyenne” Wright departed this world on June 12, 2026, at home peacefully surrounded by her loved ones, at the age of 67. She was born on September 26, 1958, in Durant, Mississippi, and was the eldest daughter of the late Robert Lee Johnson and Mary C. (Mabry) Lewis. Mary’s journey through life was marked by unwavering faith, love, and dedication to her family and community. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Robert C. Wright, whom she married in December of 1992, and who remained her steadfast partner until his passing. Together they built a life filled with love, service, and faith.

A woman of remarkable strength and creativity, Mary was known for her storytelling and wise counsel. Her life was a testament to resilience and determination, truly embodying the essence of a phenomenal woman. Her warmth and generosity were evident in her open home, where she welcomed those in need with open arms. Her passion for sharing the word of God was a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Mary’s professional life was as diverse as it was impactful. She was the proud owner of “Inner City Sounds,” a corner record store that became a community staple. Her talents extended to hair braiding and childcare, where she served as a registered in-home childcare provider. Later in life, she worked diligently in janitorial roles at Viking Pump, John Deere, and the Isle of Capri Casino. Her spiritual journey was profound, having found Christ at an early age. Mary was ordained as a deacon at Ambassadors for Christ Church in February 1999 and subsequently became a cherished member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Later, her faith and devotion continued at Union Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an active member until her health declined.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love through her five children: Tokisa Love, Toneea Johnson-Love, Eugene Love, Arron (Shayla) Love, Chakila Wright and her extended family who called her their own. Her surviving siblings, Linda Johnson, Luresa Johnson, Kris (Jason) Manning, and brothers, James and Lee Johnson, remain to carry forward her spirit of kindness and resilience. Mary was a devoted grandmother to 28 grandchildren and a loving great-grandmother to 4, each of whom she cherished deeply.

Preceded in death by her Parents, Stepfather Aster Lewis, 2 brothers Robert “Boojack” (Cindy) Johnson and Hubert “Sonny” Johnson, her grandchild Shakira Gary and her great-niece, Cherish Arceneaux. Mary legacy will forever live on through her caring spirit, perseverance, and the love she poured into her family and friends.
