Martin John Jarchow

Martin “Marty” J. Jarchow, 83, of Waterloo, IA died Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Marty was born February 4, 1935 in Hawkeye, IA, son of Raymond W. and Nellie R. Nixon Jarchow. He graduated from Fayette High School in 1953. He married Sally Ann Gash Hammel April 24, 1971 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Marty was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Waterloo for 32 years, retiring in 1990. He also worked at the Grout Museum for several years as head of maintenance and a grounds keeper.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a member of the local and state letter carrier’s unions, the Association of Letter Carriers. He served as a Treasurer for many years in the local union and was an educational trainer for the state union. He was also a member of Waterloo AMVETS Post #19. He served in the United States Army and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Marty is survived by his wife, Sally Jarchow of Waterloo; his eight children, Perry (Chris) Jarchow of Ocala, FL, Laurie Berjke of Marshalltown, IA, Brenda Jarchow of Naples, FL, Melody Jarchow of Alamo, TX, Charles Jarchow of Waterloo, Russell (Tanatip) Jarchow of Naples, FL, Jorje (Brenda) Jarchow of Waterloo, and Faith (Doug) Steere of Stout, IA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley (Don) Weyant of Nevada, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson, Martin Jarchow.
