Marlin R. Reid Nichols

Marlin R. Nichols, 87, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 27, 2024. He was born on March 17, 1937, the son of Glen and Geneva Ohloff Nichols. Marlin attended Gates Business College where he studied accounting and was a self-employed carpenter. He married Diane Davis on October 10, 1964, and the couple was blessed with three children.

Without trying, Marlin was a funny guy. He had a way of finding a solution to a problem, even if that solution was absurd on the surface. Marlin would say things that were totally off the wall, except he was being serious, even though others found those things hilarious. Marlin had a soft side-he was fiercely loyal to his family; he loved his wife and children deeply. He also enjoyed reading, especially health books where he could self-diagnose any ailment and he enjoyed trips to Branson, MO.

Marlin is survived by his special friend, Becky Vauthier; children, Michelle (Bob) Folkerts of Allison, David (Morgan) Nichols of Waterloo, and Rhonda (Mark) Chiattello of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; siblings Robert (Roberta) Nichols and William (Mary) Nichols, both of Evansdale, Glenda Larson of Cedar Falls, and Cathy (Doug) Sheeley of Waterloo; sisters-in-law, Jurly Nichols of Evansdale, Betty Nichols of Mason City, and Norma Nichols; brothers-in-law, Leland (Vickie) Davis and Don Davis; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, great-grandson Casey Nichols; brothers Lores, Ronald, Gerald, and John Nichols; sister JoAnn Chase, sisters-in-law Arlita Nichols and Jackie Davis; brothers-in-law Steve Gehrke and Jim Larson; nephew, Larry Nichols; and niece, Lindsay Nichols.

Visitation for Marlin will be Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 9:30-11:30 AM, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo. Funeral services will also be Thursday at 11:30 AM, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorial contributions should be directed to the family.
