Lilla "Mavis" Peppler, 86, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 28, 2023, while a resident of Friendship Village Wellspring Living following a short illness. She was born on October 13, 1936, the daughter of William "Bill" and Carrie DeHart Hoke. Mavis grew up in Cleghorn, IA and graduated from Cleghorn High School. Shortly after graduation, Mavis moved to Waterloo where she met the love of her life, David Peppler at a roller rink. They married on November 21, 1957, in LaMesa, CA where David was serving in the US Marine Corps. David and Mavis shared 55 years together and were blessed with two children. They returned to Waterloo following Dave's enlistment where she briefly worked for Sears before settling into the role of wife and stay-at-home mother.
Mavis loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, camping, and dancing. A very good cook, she is remembered for making roast beef and dumplings, one of her specialties. She was a huge fan of Chic-fil-A and she even held a valid motorcycle license. Growing up in a small town, Mavis used to tell stories about going uptown on a Saturday night, even though that meant a trip of only a couple of blocks.
Mavis is survived by her children, Cindy (Bruce) Skerik of Gilbertville and Mike Peppler of Waterloo, and other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave, on January 9, 2013. She will be missed by all who knew her.
