Jerry L Gatewood

Jerry L. Gatewood, 80, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Allen Hospital. He was born September 3, 1944, in Waterloo, son of James H. and Margerite N. (Freeman) Gatewood. He married Carol Saunders, they later divorced. In 1974, he married Sheryl (Mosley) Wohlert on Nov. 29, in Galena, IL. They celebrated 50 years this year.

Jerry attended East High where he was the one of the best left-handed pitchers for the Trojans, and first chair alto sax player, graduating in 1962. He worked at J.S. Latta in Cedar Falls until he started working at John Deere in 1966. He also co-owned and operated G & G construction, pouring cement during the day and working third shift at John Deere. When he retired after 33 years, he and his "wifey" fulfilled their dream of moving to Wisconsin and living on the Mississippi River. There he enjoyed his favorite things: fishing, playing cards with family, and meeting friends to watch football at the Brite Spot. After 22 years, they moved back to Waterloo to be closer to family. Laughter was a common sound in the family house with a bowl of popcorn almost every night, freshly made. He loved life, and he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife Sheryl of Waterloo. His children, Michelle (Jeff) Howard of TX; Brian Gatewood of TX; Danette (Joe) Priebe of Cedar Falls; Kendra (Chris Usher) Wohlert of Cedar Falls; Justin (Samantha) Wohlert of Cedar Falls, and Troy (Rachael) Gatewood of Waterloo. Eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Brother, Ronald W. (Carol) Gatewood of Cedar Falls.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of Life Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, December 26, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park funeral home (4140 Kimball Ave).

Inurnment will be at a later date in the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family at this time.
