Janice Lee Hamer, 81 of Waterloo, went to meet her Lord peacefully, on Sunday, December 17th, at her daughter and son-in-law's home, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice.
Janice was born on May 18, 1942, in Iowa City, to her parents William and Sylvia (Thresher) Weighley. She grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo West High School. She was an associate for the Waterloo Community Schools, starting her career at Orange Elementary, then transferring to Grant Elementary, which later became Cunningham School for Excellence, where she helped to form the futures of hundreds of children over a 37-year career, retiring at age 73.
On December 23, 1960, Janice was united in marriage to Richard Arlan Hamer at the First Brethren Church in Waterloo; together, the couple welcomed a son and a daughter into their family.
Janice was a longtime member of the First Brethren Church in Waterloo, which later merged with the Hammond Avenue Church of the Brethren, where she played the organ, piano, and sang in the choir. In Janice's free time, she enjoyed quilting, baking, gardening, fishing, playing games with and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a true lover of anything nature related and loved watching birds. Her greatest loves were just being with family and friends, which is why you would always see a smile on her face. She was loving, caring, and selfless, but also stoic. She lived a long, blessed and happy life and will be dearly missed by her loving family.
She is survived by her children Keith (Cindy) Hamer of Denver, IA and Wendy (Jeff) Ubben of Waterloo; grandchildren Leah (Joe) Morton of Bondurant, Blake (Kylea) Hamer of Cedar Falls, Shane (Nicole) Elbert of Council Bluffs, Aaron (Brianna) Elbert of Waterloo and Austin Hamer of Denver; great-grandchildren Afton, Evlyn, Olyvia, McKinley, Owen, Sawyer, Wyatt, Elena, Emilia, Elijah and Collins. Janice is preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, and several aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 21st at 10:30 AM at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at the Orange Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
