James ‘Jim’ Riley Johnson II

April 5, 1928 June 8, 2026

James R. Johnson, 98, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully at Friendship Village on June 8, 2026. Jim was born on April 5, 1928, in Urbana, to Riley and Eva J. (Saunders) Johnson. He graduated from West High School in 1945 and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1948. Following his military service, he attended Iowa State Teachers College and later the University of Iowa, where he earned a degree in business.

On September 10, 1949, he married Betty L. Harrison at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Together they shared more than 76 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and service to others.

Jim began his career in the insurance industry and in 1957 co-founded Fish-Johnson Insurance agency. He enjoyed a successful career, retiring in 1994.

A devoted husband and father, Jim loved taking his three children on vacations that combined adventure with opportunities to learn about America’s rich history. In retirement, he and Betty traveled extensively in their motorhome, creating lasting memories together. Jim also developed a passion for cooking and found great joy in preparing meals for family and friends. He was especially known for playing Santa Claus, taking his grandchildren on memorable adventures, and bringing laughter and happiness to those around him.

In 2014 Jim and Betty moved to Friendship Village, where they formed many cherished friendships. Jim was known for his warm smile, kind heart, and willingness to help others. He enjoyed visiting with fellow residents and brightening their days with conversation and encouragement.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his three children, Cindy (Mike) Miehe of Waterloo, Blake (René) Johnson of Gilbert, Arizona, and Randy (Elaine) Johnson of Waukee; six grandchildren, Stephanie Miehe, Kyle Johnson, Quinn Johnson, Wyatt Johnson, MacKenzie (Mark) Blessington, and Spencer (Shelby) Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Jullien, Ava, Emerson, Adelyn, and Riley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Helen Hoffman.

In accordance with Jim’s wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy for medical education and research, and no services will be held at this time. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Friendship Village, or Trinity Episcopal Parish.

I am sorry to hear this. Jim and Betty were Jim and my neighbors. When Jim (my husband) was in Hospice, he would bake and bring sugar cookies… my family, especially my brother, would grab as many as they could. The recipe is still being used and if my daughter doesn’t bring a large batch, she gets into trouble with her brothers!! He was a great person. Prayers and hugs to his family. Teri Berry

  5. Anne Sergeant says:

    Randy & family,
When I first moved across the street from your folks – they were so friendly & kind. My daughter, Brooke, loved them. She always looked forward to Halloween & trick-or-treating with the big bright pumpkin & his great voice. After we moved we still took her & the boys over there.

    I always talking with them.

I’m very sorry for your loss. May all your wonderful memories sustain you at this difficult time. God bless,
