Helen Matthews

Helen Matthews, 87, formerly of Finchford, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center-Waterloo.

Helen was born on September 19, 1937, to Fredrick C. and Sophia (Stoffregen) Winning in Sumner. She graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1956. Helen married Eugene A. Matthews on August 10, 1957, at Good Shepherd Church in Waterloo; he preceded her in death on April 16, 2024. Helen received Jesus Christ as her Savior on March 21, 1963, when she realized that she was the ungodly one that Jesus she His precious blood for. She worked for Cedar Falls Lutheran Home where she was immensely proud of caring for the residents in taking care of their daily needs by tending to their housekeeping and linen needs for 18 years. Helen's favorite past times were bird watching and listening to Gospel music and reading the Bible, baking, and cooking for her beautiful family, and traveling with her husband, Gene.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Owen Matthews, and 7 siblings, Harold (Pearl) Winning, Florence (Patrick) Barnett, Arnold Winning, Darlene (Richard) Hilleshiem, Raymond Winning, Lawerence Winning, and Fredrick Winning.

Helen is survived by her sons, Bruce (Fran) Matthews of Reinbeck, Scott (Renee) Matthews of Oelwein; and Timothy Matthews of Lawler; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dolores and Penelope Winning; and many, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation and Funeral Service: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Locke Garden View Chapel, 3655 Logan Ave, Waterloo. Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery-Waterloo.
