Glenn R. Bishop, 93, was born July 4, 1922 on the family farm in rural Jasper County, son of Fred P. and Ada Kling Bishop. Glenn grew up during the depression, went to a one-room elementary school, and graduated from Newton High School. He went on to earn Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from ISU and to teach at the University of Texas. Glenn served in the Air Corps during World War II as a navigator.
Glenn married his wife of almost 70 years, Doris E. Hawn, on July 14, 1946. Glenn worked as an engineer at John Deere for 33 years working on a variety of innovative designs and engine concepts including early experiments with computer designed engines. Glenn and Doris built their own house, continuing to improve it as the family grew.
Glenn was heavily involved in Boy Scouts and helped his three sons and grandson become Eagle Scouts. Glenn enjoyed travel and he and Doris visited all 50 states and many countries in Europe. He loved hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, and the outdoors, especially in western United States and Canada. Glenn and Doris enjoyed ballroom dancing throughout their time together.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Doris, Waterloo, IA; three sons, Randy Bishop of Waterloo, Steven (Julie) Bishop of St. Paul, MN, and David Bishop of Falcon Heights, MN; four grandchildren, Charlie (Kimberly) Bishop of Eagan, MN, Anna (Mathew) Rehrig of London, England, Scott Bishop of White Bear Lake, MN, and Michael Bishop of White Bear Lake, MN; and three great grandchildren, Nora, Brynn, and June Bishop of Eagan, MN.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Richard Bishop.
