Eugene Allan Matthews

Eugene A. Matthews, 91, of Waterloo, formerly of Finchford, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Unity Point Hospital-Waterloo. He was born on March 30, 1933, in Orchard, IA to Roy A. and Reka M. (Luecht) Matthews. Gene married Helen Winning on August 10, 1957, at Good Shepherd Church in Waterloo and she survives.

Gene graduated from Riceville High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He worked as a sanitation and maintenance technician for Rath Packing and for Hilpipre Auction Co. Gene enjoyed arrowhead hunting and collecting stamps.

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Owen Matthews; sister, Ruth I. Deets; brother, Marvin Matthews; and brother-in-law, Fred Winning.

Gene is survived by his wife, Helen of Waterloo; sons, Bruce (Fran) Matthews of Reinbeck, Scott (Renee) Matthews of Oelwein; and Timothy Matthews of Lawler; brother, Roy (Janice) Matthews Jr. of Charles City; sisters, Dolores Winning of Independence, Carol (Harley) Lines of Marble Rock, and Linda (Dave) Platz of Orchard; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren; and many, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Locke Garden View Chapel, 3655 Logan Ave, Waterloo. There will be a visitation one hour prior. Burial will take place at Garden of Memories Cemetery-Waterloo with military honors provided by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post #138 and the Iowa Army National Guard.
