Esther Erbele

September 30, 1927 May 27, 2026

Esther Erbele, 98, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026 at Bridges Senior Living.

Esther was born on September 30, 1927 in Rincón, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Juan and Marcelina (Ruiz) Figueroa. She received her high school diploma from Straubenmüller Textile High School in New York City in January of 1947 and earned a college degree from Manhattan Medical Assistants’ School in January of 1948; trained and certified as a Laboratory Technician.

On January 24, 1953, Esther married Harold Norbert Erbele at First Baptist Church in the Bronx, New York City. They later returned to Harold’s home in North Dakota before relocating to Iowa where they raised their family of five children. Harold passed away on July 31, 2002. In 2011, Esther married Melbourne “Bud” Lonergan at Harvest Vineyard Church in Waterloo, Iowa; they were briefly together until his passing on July 21, 2012.

Esther worked in the medical field as a lab technician for more than thirty years, retiring from Allen Memorial Hospital in 1996. She also taught adult Spanish classes at night through Hawkeye Community College and served as a translator throughout the Cedar Valley – assisting medical professionals, educators, law enforcement, and her dear friends and neighbors. Esther loved sharing her Puerto Rican culture and language with others and rarely missed an opportunity to teach someone a new Spanish word or phrase.

One of Esther’s greatest passions (besides riding her 3-wheeled bicycle) was dancing. Whether it was polka, salsa, rock or worship, she couldn’t sit still when music was playing. Dancing reflected her vibrant spirit and love of life – a testament to the joy and energy she carried even weeks before her passing.

Most notably, Esther had a remarkable ability to find beauty and joy in the littlest of things – the green grass, a blue sky, a warm breeze, the twinkling lights of the city, a simple act of kindness. Her positivity was contagious. She approached each day with gratitude and enthusiasm. Esther made sure that everyone around her felt welcomed, appreciated, and valued. She genuinely loved people.

Esther was an inspiration to all, even the stranger; teaching others through her example to live life to its fullest, enjoy and love others deeply, and to trust the Lord with all your heart.

She is survived by her two sons, Clark (Lori) Erbele of Cedar Falls and David Erbele of Waterloo; two daughters, Judy (George) Marshall of Waterloo and Rose (Guillermo Ordaz Ayala) Horan of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Marcelina Figueroa; sister, Maria “Gura” (Primitivo) Caro, husband, Harold Erbele; husband, Melbourne Lonergan; and daughter, Teresa (Jerry) Kirchoff.

Family-directed memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Harvest Vineyard Church in Waterloo with a meal to follow. Memorials may be directed to the family.
