Edith P. Smith, 91, of Waterloo, formerly of 1847 Hawthorne Street in Waterloo, died at Friendship Village Retirement Center on Sunday, January 13, 2008, of natural causes.

She was born February 4, 1916 in Winthrop, Iowa, the daughter of Price and Jenny Hudson Burnell.

Edith Pearl Burnell married Merel E. Smith on November 11, 1933 at the Linden United Methodist Church in Waterloo; he died October 6, 2006.

She worked at Hinson Mfg. and later at Santa Claus Industries where she was a foreman, retiring in 1981.

Edith belonged to Cedar Valley Community Church and was an active member of “The Life That Wins” program.

She is survived by daughter Donna Miller and her husband Ivan of Waterloo, four grandchildren: Reece (Anne) Miller, Randy Miller, Lori (Larry) Wendling, and Mark (Jodi) Miller, and nine great grandchildren: Wesley Miller, Justin (Aubrie) Miller, Melissa Wendling, Ryan Miller, Miranda Miller, Alli Miller, Andrew Miller, Philip Wendling, and Jacob Miller.

Edith is preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, and six sisters.
