Stephen Alan Mong, MD, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023, at home, from complications of colon cancer.
He was born August 17, 1951, in Muncie, Indiana, the only child of Gerald Emerson and Dorothy Eleanor Carroll Mong. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Anne Bishop on July 9,1983, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Steve graduated from Muncie Central High School and received his bachelor's degree at Ball State University in 1974, and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, in 1984. He attended Northwestern University for his surgical residency and completed his urology training at Duke University.
He practiced urology at Northern Iowa Urological Associates in Waterloo, for 22 years, retiring in 2014.
In college, Steve disc-jockeyed at a local radio station and once subbed for David Letterman. He loved music from the 50's and 60's, especially Motown. He actually could "name that tune" in three notes.
His favorite pastimes included playing golf and volunteering as a walking scorer in many professional golf tournaments. He was thrilled when Rory McIlroy, Fred Couples and other professional golfers referred to him as "Doc" and he once examined John Daly's injured hand.
Steve was quite proud of his collection of fine wine and liquor, especially scotch, and enjoyed sharing with friends. He was a die-hard fan of Indiana basketball and Notre Dame football.
Steve's intelligence and surgical skills were unparalleled. He was dedicated to his profession and cared deeply for his patients.
His family would like to thank oncologist Dr. Singh, in Waterloo, the oncology team at Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Cedar Valley Hospice for their caring guidance, and hospice nurse Kelsey, for her compassion and support when we needed it most.
Steve felt that his greatest achievement was his family and is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Elizabeth, and their two sons, Andrew, of Cedar Rapids and Alexander (Ashlyn Soelberg), stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial gathering to visit and reminisce will take place from 1-3pm, Sunday, November 19, at Locke Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Cedar Bend Humane Society. Condolences may be left at www.lockefuneralservices.com.
