Dr. Gilbert F. "Gib" Glasson, 99, of Waterloo, died Monday, December 4, 2023, at his home.
Gib was born January 4, 1924, in Waterloo, the son of Earl C. and Dorothy (Crowell) Glasson. In 1942, he graduated early from Waterloo East High School and enlisted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. During the war, he returned home and obtained a DDS from the University of Iowa. He married Emmagene "Emmie" Fraher April 7, 1947, in Dubuque. Gib got his first job in Washington D.C. where he worked for the Federal Bureau of Standards for Dentistry. In 1950, Gib enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict.
In 1952, Gib and Emmie moved back to Waterloo where Gib went into private practice, and they started their family. He was a dentist in Waterloo for over 40 years. In the 1980s, Gib served on the board of the World Dental Federation (FDI) and traveled the world with Emmie for his work which included memorable trips to Europe and South America. He retired in 1989. After over 56 years of marriage, Emmie passed away on February 3, 2004.
Gib then married Janice L. Hahn on April 29, 2006, and they enjoyed 13 years together before she also preceded in him death on November 12, 2019.
He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church where he sang in the choir, the Waterloo Elks Club BPOE #290, and Sunnyside Country Club where he enjoyed golf, golf, and more golf. Gib also went on the September 2015 Honor Flight.
Gib is survived by three daughters, Marsha Toonen of Waunakee, WI, Jeanette Gibbs of Waterloo, and Judith (Michael) Scarbrough of Waterloo; a son, Gilbert (Julie) Glasson II of Billings, MT; eight grandchildren, Heather Toonen, Dr. Sarah (Dr. Matt) Karls, Brian (Danielle) Toonen, Christopher Gibbs, Joshua (Tina) Scarbrough, Carrie (Charlie Cizek) Scarbrough, Emily Glasson, and Matt (Alycia) Glasson; 10 great-grandchildren, Madison Cizek, Caly Cizek, Charlie Cizek, Chloe Scarbrough, Ash Scarbrough, Annorah Karls, Frederick Karls, Carter Toonen, Cody Toonen, and Payton Glasson; four great-great-grandchildren, Collin, Ariah, Haizley, and Greyson; three step-daughters, Mandy (David) Sargent, Sue (John) Hawn, and Katy (David) Rohle; and a step-great-grandchild, Konner Newhouse.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wives; a brother, Roger Glasson; a sister, Barbara Swinehart; and a son-in-law, Dennis Gibbs.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at St. Edward Catholic Church. A private family burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post #31 and the Iowa Army National Guard Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 11, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, with a 5:00 p.m. rosary and 7:00 p.m. vigil service; also for one hour prior to mass at church.
