Dorothy J. Macomber, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, February 5, 2023, at UnityPoint Health Allen Hospital.

She was born September 7, 1939 in Higbee, Missouri, the daughter of William "Thomas" and Margaret (McDonald) Gravitt.

Dorothy had attended school in Higbee and Moberly, Missouri.

She married Fred Vittetoe in January of 1957; he preceded her in death in November of 1957. Dorothy married William Macomber on February 7, 1959 in Moberly, Missouri; he preceded her in death on May 4, 2003.

Dorothy started working at the Salvation Army in 1980. She was the kitchen supervisor and ran the soup kitchen for many years, feeding thousands of people.

She was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel and past president of the Maywood School PTA. Dorothy enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was known to always have a smile on her face and was welcoming to everyone, she never turned anyone away. She had a love for animals, feeding the birds and squirrels. She enjoyed the company of her faithful pets, Missy Jo and Midnight. She was an avid baseball fan, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals. Family meant the world to her, especially her grandchildren.

Survived by two sons, Dan (Robin) Macomber of Charles City and Tim Macomber of Waterloo; two daughters, Pam (Bob) Soderstrom and Patty Billington both of Waterloo; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Loutillis Gravitt of Macon, MO, LeRoy Garman of Shickley, NE, and James Garman of Ashland, NE; seven sisters, Alberta Riley of Macon, MO, Rachel Fainter of Moberly, MO, Vinnie Dowell of Cheyanne, WY, Blanche Harris of St. Joseph, MO, Cora Warner of Topeka, KS, Nora Davis of Winfield, MO, and Flora Garman of Kirksville, MO; and brother & sister-in-law, Richard and Kathy Macomber of Evansdale.

Preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Fred and William; siblings, Tommy Gravitt, David Gravitt, and several others; great-great granddaughter, Scarlette Wilson; and two sons-in-law, Gene Alcott and Ricky Billington.
