Donald  Edward Akers

Donald Edward Akers, 69, of Waterloo, died on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home at Waterloo.

He was born on December 5, 1955, in Iowa City, son of Donald and Ila Sanderson Burkholder.

Donny graduated from Waterloo East High School, Class of 1974.

He married Mary Horihan on July 13, 1974; they later divorced. He married Tammy Lewis on August 3, 1982; they later divorced.

He had worked at John Deere in Waterloo and Star Tex Industries in Minnesota. Most recently he bartended at Packers Inn in Waterloo.

Donny loved all kinds of music, collecting movies, collecting enamel pins and making jewelry and key chains. He enjoyed football, the Hawkeyes and was an avid reader.

Donny is survived by his mother, Ila Akers of Waterloo; daughter, Stacie (Dan) Loveless of Washburn; son, Christopher Akers of Waterloo; grandchildren, Makayla Hanson, Jase Loveless and Katana Akers; brothers, James (Kim) Akers of Cedar Rapids; Dennis (Barb) Akers of Northfield, MN; Carl (Debbie) Burkholder of Clyde, TX; Clint Burkholder of Allison; sisters, Mary (Gordon) Acuff of Brandon; Debra Akers of Waterloo; Anna Olson of Fairbault, MN; Dawna (Scott) Schmit of Gilbertville; and Rebecca Rash of Cedar Falls.

He is preceded in death by his father, Donald Burkholder; adopted father, Delbert Akers who raised him; and step-son, Joe Larson.

Memorial Services: 11:00 AM, Friday, January 3, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo with inurnment immediately following services at Calvary Cemetery in Waterloo.

Visitation for an hour before services at the funeral home.
