DeLynn Thomas, 77, of Waterloo, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
DeLynn was born on August 23, 1948, in Oskaloosa, daughter of Donald H. and Muriel J. (Dingeman) Thomas.
DeLynn graduated from Winterset High School and the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in teaching. During her time at UNI, she also received trained vocal lessons. Following her studies in elementary education, she pursued training in substance abuse counseling and working with clients who had special needs. She retired from EPI in 2013.
She married Peter J. Kemp in 1970. They were the parents of three children and eventually divorced. With her exceptional voice, DeLynn was asked to sing at various events, especially weddings. Her interests over her life included: playing the piano, biking, swimming, dancing, reading, collecting quotations, and caring for her grandchildren. Being involved with various organizations was of special interest to her. These included Pro Life, St. Vincent DePaul, and the Church Rosary Society of which she was president.
DeLynn is survived by her sons, Donald and Nicholas Kemp, both of Waterloo and a daughter, Rachel Kemp of Waterloo with whom she made her home, along with receiving wonderful care for the past ten years, plus two grandchildren, Marteis and Amara. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Craig Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., 17th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60601 or Care Initiatives Hospice Program, 6915 Chancellor Dr., Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo.
