Cleo Genene Murty nee Nichols passed into eternal life peacefully on June 12, 2026, at Unity Point (Allen) Hospital in Waterloo, IA. Born in Albion, NE on September 7, 1931, she led an active and fruitful life. On September 9, 1951, Genene married Lyle D. Murty at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo, IA.
Genene was first of all a loving wife to Lyle and mother to their children, Vicki and Lance. Genene was a Brownie Scout and Girl Scout leader for several years in the 1960s. She enjoyed singing alto in the church choir, first at GMC and later at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church. Genene was always very active in the women’s circles at church and was recording secretary for GMC’s United Methodist Women. She was GMC’s delegate to the annual Methodist Conference several times.
At KAUMC, in addition to being active in choir and women’s circle, she also taught adult Sunday School for many years. Genene was a volunteer teacher’s aide for Heart Start Pre-school at GMC. She and Lyle enjoyed volunteering for R.S.V.P. in Waterloo after Lyle retired. In retirement, Genene and Lyle enjoyed traveling all around the United States, visiting many national parks and historic places, from coast to coast. Her smile and amusing conversation will be missed by her family and devoted friends from KAUMC.
Genene is survived by her children Vicki Wiese (John) and Lance Murty (Mary Chaffin), grandchildren Beth Wiese, Sarah Wiese, Andrew Wiese, Daniel Murty, and Gregory Chaffin, and her sister-in-law Shirley Murty Deal of Marshalltown and numerous nephews and nieces, including Richard Roberg and Elizabeth Cross. Genene is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lyle, her parents Alta Mackie Nichols and Clarence Nichols, and her sisters Ruth Gibbard and Arlene (Olaf) Roberg, sisters and brothers-in-law.

My sympathies and prayers to your families Vicki and Lance. She finally got her prayers answered to be reunited with Lyle.
Her and Lyle, where a great couple together, I could tell how much love they had for each other. I have been a member of kinball Avenue. The church for over 20 years. Yeah. And I couldn’t fine. A couple that were more happy with each other. Then,
I met Lyle and Gene when I joined Grace church. They were part of the village that helped raise our 2 girls. So many wonderful memories of both of them. Sharing a smile and laughing together. For many years Gene was a regular volunteer in the Waterloo public schools. Always a kind word and a smile for students and staff.
