Carlton E. Wagner, 92, of Lantern Square and Bickford Cottage, died at Covenant Medical Center on Thursday, December 20, 2007.

He was born April 29, 1915 in Waterloo, the son of Frank T. and Faye Scoville Wagner.

Carlton married Jane Parrott on June 22, 1940 in Waterloo. She died March 25, 1992.

He attended the East High school system until 1933 and then followed his education with courses of study in programs of continuing education.

Prior to WWII, he went to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he worked in sales for the Rath Packing Co. After serving in the Army during WWII he resumed working for Rath until 1955; he then worked in sales in the cattle business for the Gartner Harf Co. in Erie until retiring part-time in 1977, and then fully retiring in 1980.

Carlton was patient, giving, honest, and kind-a listener and soother. He was a consummate steward for Christ, evidenced in so many ways in his life. He was a teacher and volunteer for over 60 years. He served his community, his church, and his friends. He could teach the rules of golf or the rules of life. He could be the best father you could imagine not only for his boys but also for their friends. He was a part of the “Greatest Generation” and shared the best of its characteristics.

Following his wife’s death in 1992, he moved back to Waterloo where he enjoyed living at Lantern Square Apartments. He enjoyed bike riding, golfing and volunteering. He volunteered at area hospitals as a patient escort at Allen and also drove the Sunshine van for Covenant’s prenatal unit. Carlton continued to be a Lay Eucharistic Minister at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Carlton is survived by his sons: Carlton W. of Jakarta, Indonesia and Robert A. and his wife Judy of Denver, Colorado, and brother Glenn of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, son David J., brothers: Lloyd, Ralph, and Frank Jr., and sister Fern White.
