Beverly Faye Smith, 80, of Waterloo, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at University of Iowa Health Care.

Beverly was born on July 6, 1946, in Des Moines, to Junior and Gladys (Dougherty) Choate. She graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1964 and later attended Hawkeye Tech. Beverly married David J. Smith on September 10, 1966, in Des Moines; he preceded her in death on February 11, 2002.

Beverly will be fondly remembered for serving delicious meals, especially her Potato Salad at Steamboat Gardens for more than 35 years. She loved to quilt and crochet, creating beautiful Afghans and quilts for family and friends. Whenever she visited her mom in Des Moines, the two of them could often be found creating a quilt together.

An avid crafter and cook, Beverly’s famous Popcorn Cake was always a hit at the craft shows she and her husband, Dave, attended as Watkins Spices and Seasonings dealers.

Above all, Beverly was happiest when she was spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling them. Her love, creativity, and kindness will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Lester “Sonny” Choate, brother-in-law, Walter Spragg, and son, Robert B. Smith.

Beverly is survived by her son, Lester Smith, his son, Christopher (Jazmine) Smith; her daughter, Heather Ann Parmenter, her son, Austin Smith; sister, Mary Ann Spragg, sisters-in-law, Judy Choate and Patricia Smith, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026. Inurnment to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
