Barbara Jean Durnil

Barbara "Barb" Jean St. John Durnil, 83, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Friendship Village. She was born on April 20, 1940, in Waterloo, the daughter of Paul and Lorene Prange St. John. Barb graduated from East High School in 1958, and married William Durnil on July 21, 1960, in Palmyra, MO. To this union, the couple was blessed with a son, William Durnil Jr. Barb worked as a credit manager for the Waterloo Courier until her retirement in 2005. She was also a tax preparer for H&R Block.

Barb was a sassy, funny little lady who wasn't afraid to put you in your place. You knew where you stood with her, and she was straight forward. She enjoyed doing puzzles, watching Iowa Basketball, reading, and especially watching game shows and The Bold and the Beautiful. She was the family "tax queen" and helped everyone with their taxes. Barb was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo and served as church treasurer for 6 years, and as treasurer for her condo association in Rockton, IL. She loved her son and his family and moved to Rockton to be closer to them and ultimately, to help with the grandchildren after the untimely death of her son.

Barb is survived by her daughter-in-law, Cindi Durnil of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Kaitlyn Durnil of Verona, WI and Austin Durnil of Iowa City; brothers Don (Ginger) St. John of Wisetta, MN, Rich (Jean) St. John of Sonora, CA, and Steve (Jan) St. John, of Rockville, MD; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, and a brother, Duane St. John.

Funeral services for Barb will be Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Locke on 4th, 1519 W 4th St, Waterloo, with a visitation for 30 minutes prior to the service. Private burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery will be at a later date. As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Trinity American Lutheran Church, 605 W 4th St., Waterloo 50702.
