Dr. Andrew Clark Smith, 82, died Thursday, November 1, 2007, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls of dementia and natural causes with his immediate family members by his side.

Andy was born September 8, 1925, in Charles City, Iowa, to James Main Smith and Agnes (Clarke Campbell) Smith. His parents had immigrated in 1920 (James) and 1921 (Agnes) to the United States due to unsettled conditions in Northern Ireland and initially lived with relatives in Grinnell before moving to Charles City. As a youngster, he and his brother delivered donuts and cookies in a wagon to friends and neighbors. Later, Andy worked at J.C. Penney in Charles City where he was being groomed as a store manager. He graduated from Charles City High School, third in his class, in 1943.

By July 1943 Andy completed one semester at Oberlin College in Ohio. Andy was drafted into the U.S. Army on December 11, 1943, and after ten months stateside, fought in World War II for 19 months in the European Theater of Operations from October 1944 to May 1946. He served in the 100th Infantry Division, Company M-397th Infantry Regimen rising to a rank of staff sergeant with the mortar division.

After the war, Andy transferred to the University of Iowa where he received his pre-med degree (B.A. in General Science) with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1950. He then graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1952.

On June 15, 1952, Andy was married to Murtis Marie Gordanier, a registered nurse from Postville, Iowa. Andy served his internship and residency at Wayne University Detroit Receiving Hospital from 1952 to 1955 followed by one year of residency at Veteran’s Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan.

Andy entered private practice with Dr. Herbert Shulman in Waterloo, Iowa, in July 1956. He practiced internal medicine with Internal Medicine Associates, whose partners included Dr. Herbert Shulman, Dr. Tom Spragg, Dr. Thomas Karlowski, Dr. Michael Deters, Dr. Frank Danik and Dr. Burton Adrian, for 34 years until retirement on August 1, 1990.

Andy was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1959 and re-certified in 1974. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the American Medical Association (AMA), the Iowa State Medical Society and the Black Hawk County Medical Society.

Andy realized the importance of the nurses who assisted him, including Agnes Brody and Beverly Shirk at his office, and therefore upon retirement established the Dr. Andrew C. Smith nursing scholarship at Allen College in Waterloo.

Andy was a member of the President’s Club of the University of Iowa Foundation; the UI Alumni Association; the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee; as a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary; Elk’s Club and American Legion Post #138.

A saxophone and clarinet player, Andy penned the Charles City High School fight song still used today and played for many years in a band known as the “Medicats” in Waterloo. Andy loved skiing, an activity he learned during WW II while in Chamonix, France. For over 30 years, Andy, Murtis, his brother Jimmy and other family members, enjoyed annual ski trips to Aspen, Colorado. Andy was an avid jogger and played tennis several times a week at Black Hawk Tennis Club and Sunnyside Country Club into his mid-70’s. Andy and Murtis were avid travelers throughout the U.S. and beginning in 1976, spanned the globe with overseas travel.

Andy is survived by wife, Murtis Smith, his children Craig Andrew (Merry Ford) Smith of Davenport and Karen Margaret Smith of Saint Paul, Minnesota; two grandchildren Roseanna Marie Smith of Atlanta, Georgia and Matthew Clark Smith of Davenport; and one brother James Fraser (Virginia) Smith of Charles City.

In addition, Andy is survived by brother-in-law Robert Sherburne; nephews Ralph (Ruth) Smith; Steven Sherburne; and Brad (Lisa) Sherburne; nieces Pam (Roy) Smith Finkelman; Beth (Darrell) Gordanier Berge; Hope (Phil) Gordanier Anderson; Linda (Marc) Sherburne Bigelow; Mary Sherburne; sister-in-law Mrs. Bernice Gordanier McCaffrey; and many more extended family and friends.

Andy is preceded in death by his parents, James Main and Agnes Smith; two brothers Robert Campbell Smith and John Lenigan Smith of Cork, Ireland; and four uncles Andrew Campbell, Robert Campbell, John W. Smith, and Robert Smith; and three aunts Martha Campbell Johnston, Margaret Campbell, and Muriel Smith Forbes.
