Almond J. “Al” Joseph Steffen Jr. Jr

Almond J. "Al" Steffen Jr., 91, of Waterloo, died on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at La Porte City Specialty Care in La Porte City.

He was born July 23, 1933, in Riceville, the son of Almond J. Sr., and Evelyn (Hansen) Steffen. He attended country school outside of Riceville through 8th grade and graduated from Riceville High School in 1951.

Al married Marilyn "Maxine" Hamand on August 1, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Riceville; she preceded him in death on December 27, 2018.

He worked for Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City, Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, and later owned and operated Steffen Cleaning with Maxine.

Al enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time with family and friends, and going on family vacations. He loved dancing in his younger years and also liked skating and playing baseball. Most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, Maxine, of 66 years.

He is survived by his three children, Robert "Bob" (Connie) Steffen of Waterloo, Kathy Steffen of Waterloo, and Jerry (Loree) Steffen of Gilbert, AZ; five grandchildren, Jenny, Nick (Rachel), Katelyn, Mitchell, and Natalie Steffen; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Teddy, and Max; and a brother, Vincent (Ann) Steffen of Mazeppa, MN.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Constance Steffen; his wife, Maxine; two brothers, Emmet "Pat" Moore, and Owen "Jack" Moore; and two sisters-in-law, Karen and Sandy Hamand.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park; also, for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice.
