William Michael Hanken

William “Bill” Michael Hanken, 73 of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025. He was born July 28, 1951, in Lakota, IA, son of William Bill and Genevieve (Coleman) Hanken. He graduated from Lakota High School and later attended Minnesota State University.

He married Colleen Finn (Deitrick); they later divorced. Bill then had a companion and soulmate for twenty-one years, Lori Nelson. She passed away on August 20, 2012.

He worked at Standard Distributing Co. and later at United Concrete in Waterloo, starting as a driver, and retired as a dispatcher in 2017.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Laura (Ryan) Zook of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Haley and Lilia Zook; his siblings: T.J. (Debby) Hanken of Colorado Springs, CO., Ann (Chuck) Champine of Ceylon, MN, and Jim (Kim) Hanken of Layton, UT; and special Friend, Vicki Brustkern.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his companion and soulmate, Lori Nelson.

Celebration of Life visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 pm Friday, March 28, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo. Family inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Memorials are directed to the family.
