Vernette Grace Marmie

Vernette Grace Marmie, 96, of Waterloo, passed away surrounded by her family at Unity Point-Allen Hospital under Cedar Valley Hospice Care.

Vernie was born on November 15, 1927, in Waterloo, to Earl Henry and Elda Leta (Meyer) Walker. She owned and operated Vernie’s Lounge in Waterloo for over 20 years. Vernie moved to the state of Oregon in 1983, where she would take many trips around the U.S. with her mom pulling her camper with all her fur babies in tow. In 2013, Vernie moved to Spencer, IN to be closer to her daughter.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Wanda Riemcke, incredibly special “son in law,” Jim Head, former husbands, Russ Gilbertson, Roland “Satch” Marmie, and Marvin Klenzman, granddaughter, Heather Donovan, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Vernie is survived by her children, Dennis (Julie) Gilbertson of Waterloo, Gil (Diann) Gilbertson of Indio, CA, Dwayne (Sherry) Gilbertson, of Grants Pass, OR, Gene (Peg) Marmie of Cedar Falls, and Georgette Marmie of Ft. Myers, FL; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will take place at Fairview Cemetery-Denver, IA.

The Marmie Family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Eagles Club, 202 E. 1st Street, Waterloo.

Locke at Tower Park is serving the family.
