Thomas L. “Tom” Balvanz, 75, of Waterloo, died Monday, July 24, 2023, at UnityPoint Health Allen Hospital.
He was born January 4, 1948, in Marshalltown, the son of Harry and Lois (Zeltman) Balvanz.
Tom graduated from Waterloo West High School with the class of 1966.
He married Barbara Ann Pierce on April 1, 1966 at Grace Brethren Church.
Tom worked as a dispatcher for Warren Transportation for 24 years until retiring in January of 2010. He kept a very good rapport with the drivers he worked with.
Tom was an avid duck and goose hunter. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. Every fall, you would find him out at the field calling and hunting geese along with family, friends, and special hunting partner, his daughter Lois.
He showed Barb, Lois and Quincy nature’s side of life and would always put them to the test of identifying waterfowl. One spring, Tom took Lois to see the migration of snow geese at Squaw Creek. That year, there were one and a half million snow geese!
Tom was always up for a road trip. He also enjoyed taking care of the lawn and his beautiful flowers.
Survived by his wife, Barbara Balvanz and daughter, Lois (Quincy) McGrane both of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Paul, Gordon, and Francis Balvanz.
Tom’s family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, office staff, food service, housekeeping and laundry service personnel. A special thank you to everyone at Pillar of Cedar Valley for your special care and concern for Tom and all your residents. It’s heartwarming.
Private family services were held.
Burial: Waterloo Cemetery.
Memorials: May be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and to the Pillar of Cedar Valley.
