Susan Rae Vogel, 74, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Mercy One Medical Center-Waterloo. She was born on March 22, 1950, in Waterloo to doting parents – Roger C. and Edna F. (Witt) McClintock. She grew up in a loving home with her parents and two brothers Bruce and Tommy. She was affectionately called "Sue" by those who were lucky enough to love her and "Moeny" by her adoring grandchildren. Susan married John W. Vogel on June 17, 1972, at Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Waterloo and had one beautiful daughter, Jodie Suzanne.

Susan lived her life in service to others and cared deeply for many causes. After graduating from West High and attending Gates Business College, she devoted many years to working as a Resident Treatment Worker for the Mental Health Institute (MHI) in Independence. She was a proud AFSCME Union member and championed workers' rights. She was passionate about local politics and knocked on hundreds of doors to support candidates she believed in.

She loved to travel and enjoyed trips all over the United States to California, New York, Florida, South Carolina, South Dakota, Missouri and beyond with family and friends. She made many trips to Des Moines to visit her family, as well. She was an active mother and grandparent, attending many family events, performances, games and activities. Over the years, Susan was a member at Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church and had a deep personal relationship with her faith. Together with her husband John, Sue profoundly loved her dogs – Woody, Sparky, Booker, Otis, Charlie, Izzy, and Bruiser. One-of-a-kind, Sue had a sweet and sassy spirit and was known for her humor, warmth, and strength. We will forever miss her remarkable strength, resilience, and sense of humor.

Susan's parents, Roger and Edna and her brother, Tommy, all preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, John Vogel of Waterloo; daughter, Jodie (Brian) Miller of Urbandale; grandchildren, Zoey (Casey) Erixon of Des Moines, Claire Miller of Urbandale, Blake Miller of Grinnell, and Grace Miller of Ames; and brother Bruce (Deborah) McClintock of Watertown, Wisconsin, along with numerous cherished extended family members and friends.
