Shirley Elaine Delagardelle

Shirley E. Delagardelle, 92, of Waterloo, died Saturday, February 22, 2025, at her home under Unity Point Hospice care.

She was born August 20, 1932, in Houghton, South Dakota, the daughter of Herman and Mollie (Kerr) Benson. She married Eugene (Digger) Delagardelle on August 20, 1952. He preceded her in death on November 7, 2018.

Shirley worked at Santa Claus Industries and then John Deere. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Womenade, Catholic Daughters, P.E.O. chapter KS, and loved to volunteer. Her nickname was "church lady" because her days always started with mass.

Shirley is survived by her son Dan (Mary) Delagardelle of La Porte City; daughters Roxanne (Dr. Eric) Willsky of Aspen, Co, and Nancy (Richard) Taylor of Waterloo; grandchildren Michael, Emma, Molly, and Sarah; and great-grandchildren Amerie, Cayla and Max.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Richard Benson, and two sisters, Mary Ellen Larson and Beverly Pothast.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 26, from 4:00-6:00 at Locke on Fourth, 1519 West 4th Street, where there will be a 4:00 Rosary. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, February 27, with visitation one hour prior to service at St. Edward Catholic Church. The service will be livestreamed at www.sted.org. Memorials may be directed to the church.
