Roger Edwin Lear

February 12, 1955 August 8, 2025

Roger Edwin Lear, 70, of Waterloo, was born on February 12, 1955, the son of Kurt Lear and Lois Webb Lear. Quite suddenly on Friday, August 8, 2025, his heart stopped beating and he left our arms for the arms of Jesus. Roger now walks on streets of gold with his daughter, Genevieve. Roger graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1973 and received his Associate of Arts degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Hawkeye Tech (now Hawkeye Community College) in 1974. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucinda Diggins, on August 25, 1973, in Waterloo, and the couple was blessed with three children. Roger worked as a project manager for TDS Automation, Division of Doerfer for 21 years.

Above everything, Roger loved the Lord. He loved leading worship at his church and serving in any way he possibly could. He was dependable, steady, and accepting of others; his moral compass was always true. Roger believed that a person should always do the right thing, and he demonstrated that with compassion and gentleness. Roger served as worship leader, choir director, and bass guitarist for his church, Grace Fellowship Church, where he was also a member. He also played French horn with the Waterloo Municipal Summer Band, something he had done since high school, and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra. Roger was the President of the Waterloo B Natural Music Club and A/V manager for the National Federation of Music Clubs. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and a good glass of wine with dinner, but despised lawn work.

Roger believed family was more than a birthright. He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Lucinda “Cindy” of Waterloo; children W. Erich (Julie) Lear of Marion and Nathaneal (Bethani) Lear of Winchester, VA; son-in-law Drew Glenn of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Brooklyn Lear, Zach Glenn, Sydney Lear, Madison Lear, Colton Lear, Zoey Lear, Waylon Taylor, Jackson Lear and Emerlyn Lear; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded by his daughter Genevieve Glenn, his parents, and his brothers Geoffrey, Erich, and Karl Lear.

Funeral services for Roger will be Friday, August 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at Grace Fellowship Church, 1760 Williston Ave, Waterloo. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery will be at a later date.
