Marvin J. “Grumpy” Olds, 92, of Waterloo, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at Unity Point-Allen Hospital.
Marvin was born on June 26, 1933, in Waterloo, to Golding “Goldie” P. and Louise R. (Hunemiller) Olds. He graduated from Waterloo East High in 1951 and went on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force in Security Services from 1952 to 1956 as an Airmen 1st Class. Marvin married Virginia M. Wade on April 19, 1958, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo; she preceded him in death on April 30, 2010.
Marvin was a dedicated firefighter, working for Waterloo Fire and Rescue for 30 years, retiring in 1988 as Fire Lieutenant. When he was not out golfing, playing billiards, or bicycling, Marvin could be found woodworking. His craftsmanship along with his ability to fix anything was a true gift and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is also preceded in death by his furry friend, Buddy the cat; parents; 7 brothers, Manuel, Milton, Myron, Melvin, Merril, Marlus, and Maxwell; 5 sisters, Marguerite Coffee, Myrtle Hickman, Marjorie Olds, Maxine Brandes, and Mary Peterson; grandson, David Cook.
Marvin is survived by his daughters, Andrea (Randy) Cook of Elk Run Heights, Libby Mix of Evansdale, and Marcia (Ted) Steimel of Waterloo; son, James (Heidi) Olds of Clemmons, NC; 9 grandchildren, Thomas, Alexis, John, James, Wade, Brian, Michael, Lauren, and Jack; 10 great-grandchildren, Colton, Alma, Ava, Jose, Antonio, Logan, Carson, Kaiden, Laine and Callie.
Family hosted burial will take place on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Grove Hill Cemetery, 3075 230th Street, Readlyn. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.
