Larry Edward Thompson

January 30, 1950 October 25, 2025

Larry Thompson, 75, of Jesup, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025. He was born on January 30, 1950, to Ed and Evelyn Thompson. Larry was united in marriage to Dorothy Olson on December 21, 1969, and they later had 2 children, Ben and Beth.

Larry was a humble, but generous, man. He served his country, community, and family faithfully his entire life. Larry spent his early years working alongside his family at the Thompson Truckstop developing his entrepreneurial spirit. He diligently worked to earn his private pilot license during his senior year in high school, and he served the U.S. Army. Larry later owned and operated Hawkeye Metal Spinning in Jesup from 1979 until his retirement in 2022, but he didn’t stop there. He dove headfirst into the movie theater business, opening Starlight Cinema in Independence in 2006. In his “retirement,” Larry also opened Thompson Development. Larry served on the Jesup School Board, was a reserve police officer for the City of Jesup, on the City Council, and was the Mayor of Jesup from 2015-2019. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling the country with Dorothy. They saw many wonderful places together. He was an avid golfer, teaching Ben and Beth both golf very early on and enjoyed traveling to their collegiate golf meets and playing wonderful courses with them.

Larry is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Ben (Janna) of Cedar Falls, daughter Beth (Mike) Stanek of Jesup, sister Diana Albrecht of Texas, brother Gary (Lori) and sister Tami Even both of Jesup, his nine grandchildren, Katelyn Jane (Nic), Oliver, Katelyn Marie, Piper, Tripp, Rocco, Jackson, Poppy and Charlie, and two great-grandchildren, Elsie and Lyla. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Crest Cemetery, in Jesup. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lockefuneralservices.com.
