Kevin Robert Powers, 61, of Waterloo, died Sunday, June 17, 2018.

He was born April 6, 1957 in San Diego, CA, the son of John “Jack” Powers and Colleen White Powers.

Kevin graduated from Columbus High School in 1975. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1976, serving aboard the USS Coral Sea as a Quarter Master, achieving the rank of E5 after one year and 11 months of service; he sailed two West PAC cruises and was honorably discharged in 1980. He attended Hawkeye Community College and the University of Northern Iowa.

He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until 2014 and was past president of the local National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), serving as a strong advocate for its members and the rights of labor.

Kevin loved his dad and held a great admiration for him, raising four sons as a single father, always instilling the importance of family, friends, and country. Their family life included loading up the camping gear and traveling for vacations. Kevin is survived by his brothers: Tom (Donna), Tim (Timi) and Joe.

He enjoyed time spent with his Labrador companion, Loyalty; his four nephews: Jake (Hailey Metzger), Josh (Jody), Scott (Lexi), and Nick (Krystle); his great-nephews and -niece; and his friends. He said he was so blessed with family and friends and in these last months would never be able to say the words … I love you… enough times to all of us.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jack; his mother; grandparents: Tom and Catherine Powers and Margaret and John “Hanley” White; and also Labradors: Liberty, Justice, and Freedom.

Kevin was a great brother, uncle and friend. He had a passion for workers’ rights, a patriotic spirit, and a love of sailing his boat, “Liberty.”
