June Marilynne Fuqua

June 1, 1925 May 26, 2016

June Marilynne Peterson Fuqua died peacefully on May 26, 2016.

This sweet, strong, loving lady quietly improved the world around her. She moved through life with grace and elegance and had a loveliness about her in both her appearance and manner. We miss her deeply and will always hold her close in our hearts.

June was born on the first of June 1925 in Chicago, IL, to Arthur and Linnie Peterson. The family attended South Shore Community Church, where June met Robert Fuqua, when both were members of The Pilgrims young people’s group. They fell in love, and were married on July 19, 1947. Over the next decade, they had four daughters.

After serving in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, Bob made the Air Force his career. He and June thoroughly enjoyed their life of service and travel, making many warm and lasting friendships. June adapted perfectly to the role of Air Force wife. Regularly pulling up stakes and moving home and family she took as a matter of course, and accomplished it with such grace and aplomb that it seemed both perfectly normal and a great adventure.

June had many interests including sewing, gardening and floral arrangement, china painting, ceramics, golf and bridge. At the core of all of these activities was the great pleasure she found in being with her friends.

In retirement, Bob and June moved to Fayetteville, NC. As military retirees, they made many friends in the communities of Pope AFB and Fort Bragg. They were active members of the Fort Bragg Chapel, and enjoyed the gracious lifestyle of the South.

In 2005, June and Bob moved to Waterloo, IA and lived near their daughter Nancy, her husband Randy and their grand- and great-grandchildren. Bob died in 2006, leaving June quite bereft without the love of her life. It is a happy thought that they are together again to celebrate lives well lived.

June is survived by her sister, Doris Swenson of Pontiac, IL, her brother, Arthur Peterson, Jr., of Dowagiac, MI, daughters Nancy (Randy) McHone, of Waterloo, IA, Kate Fuqua of Portland, OR, Virginia Fuqua of Ocean View, HI, and Betsy Fuqua of Haiku, HI, five grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Patterson Fuqua and her sister, Margery Peterson.
