John Paul Boyd, 82, of Waterloo, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center-Oelwein.
John was born on October 8, 1942, in Huntington, West Virgina, to John Richard and Edna Louise (Edward) Boyd. He graduated from Bluefield High School in 1960. Went on to attend Florida Presbyterian (now Eckerd College) in St. Petersburg, FL where he earned his BA in 1694; in 1967, he went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale; obtained Master's degree in Spanish from University of Kentucky in 1969; and Doctorate of Ministry from Lexington Theology Seminary in Lexington, KY in 1974. John was a Psychologist for the Iowa Dept. of Human Services at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo, IA, retiring in 2001. John was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, former member of the Metropolitan Chorale and New Horizons where he played bass clarinet. Since 2009, he has volunteered in the welfare office for St. Vincent dePaul. John loved to sing and read, and when he was able, he worked out at the YMCA.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his children, Lydia (Gary) Small of CA, James Boyd of West Des Moines, Matthew (Rebecca) Boyd of CA, and John Boyd of KY; brother, Richard (Norma) Boyd of Wytheville, VA; five grandchildren; and many friends whom he made through the Church.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 320 Mulberry St, Waterloo. A memorial gathering will take place one hour prior with Rosary starting at 9:30 a.m.
Inurnment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
