Janet Dunegan, 80, of Waterloo, died Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home. She was born March 10, 1946, in La Porte City, daughter of Harold and Ruth (Vaughn) Scott.

Janet married Calvin A. Dunegan on December 23, 1963, in Waterloo; he preceded her in death on February 23, 2012.

She attended Traviss Vo Tech in Florida for two years and worked as a Food Service Manager at an Alabama school system and then as a CNA for many years. She was a member of Open Bible Church in Waterloo. She had a profound belief in God, and love for her brothers and sisters in the church community.

Janet had a huge heart and spent her whole life taking care of other people. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. Her favorite thing to do was playing BINGO and slots at the Tama casino. She also liked making arts and crafts, and butterflies.

She is survived by her sons, Calvin Dunegan, Jr. of Staunton, Va, and Joe (Jennifer) Dunegan of Leesville, Al, daughter Christina (Hipolito) Vazquez, sisters: Mary Steen of Missouri, Carole Barritt of Waterloo, and Patricia Howard’ of Waterloo, brother, Dick Scott of Dysart, ten grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, including Vicki (Roger) Jones, and Cindy (Mike) Bruce who were especially helpful to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Dunegan, her parents, her grandson Tracy Wilson, two brothers: Donald and Jimmy Scott, and four sisters: Evelyn Kearns, Barbara Dixon, Betty Scott, and Kathy Smith.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00AM, at Open Bible Church, 928 Jefferson Street, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to Open Bible Church.
