James Lloyd Doud

Cedar Falls, James L. "Jim" Doud, 85 of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Deery Suites of Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls. He was born December 1, 1939, in Whitten, the son of Wallace Cobb and Nina (Hauser) Doud. Jim graduated from Belle Plaine Senior High School in 1957. He then went to play football at Coe College for a semester, transferring to Drake University. He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in three years so he could marry his sweetheart, Janet Formanek.

He married Janet Kay Formanek on June 26, 1960, at the Methodist Church in Belle Plaine. Jim started teaching 5th grade in Eagle Grove where he was appointed Teaching and Building Administrator, continuing his education working toward his master's degree on Saturdays from Drake University. He earned his Doctoral Degree from the University of Iowa in Elementary School Curriculum. Jim became the Principal at Van Buren Elementary in Cedar Rapids for 4 years and then moved to Cedar Falls. He became the Principal at Price Lab for seventeen years. Then, he was a professor at the University of Northern Iowa where he taught in areas of advanced education until he and Janet moved to Florida in 1994. At the University of Florida, Jim was the Chair in the Department of Education Leadership, focusing on Principal Education with an emphasis in Leadership, for 22 years, finally retiring in 2016. During those years, he served as advisor for 29 doctoral dissertations and on teams assisting Florida community school districts develop their strategic plans.

Over the years, Jim served on several boards but two impacted him greatly over the years, the North Central Association of Accreditation of School Principals and as President of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, "NAESP" in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Doud of Cedar Falls; two children, daughter, Jennifer (Tim) Novak of Spring, Texas, and son, Justin (Janice) Doud of Van Meter; four grandchildren, Elisabeth (Kevin Ikelle) Novak, Rachel (Steven) Franklin, Dynas Doud, and Drake Doud; great-granddaughter, Miri Franklin; and sister-in-law, Betsy Doud.

A Family Directed Celebration of Life will be 2:00pm – 4:00pm, March 12, 2025, in the Diamond Event Center at the Western Home Communities.

Inurnment will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Bell Plaine at a later date.

Memorials will be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice, or the family.
